
Hailed as “an excellent tenor” by the Boston Globe, Enrique Toral is an artist
whose "radiant singing" and "unusually vivid" portrayals have been recognized
across the country. His performance in Wolf-Ferrari’s I Quattro Rusteghi
inspired the San Francisco Metro News to exclaim, “Enrique Toral has the kind
of fresh, unbridled tenor voice that can make the listener’s own lungs fill with a
breath of admiration.” This last summer he appeared in concert with the
Spreckels Organ Society at the Organ Pavillion in San Diego's Balboa Park and
performed in Puccini's seldom heard opera La Rondine in the role of the poet
Prunier during the 2007-2008 season with Lyric Opera San Diego. He will
appear with Pro Musica in Ensenada, Mexico in a concert of arias and duets in
the month of May and will return to Lyric Opera San Diego singing the title role
in Rumpelstiltskin, a world premiere chamber opera by Nicolas Reveles and J.
Sherwood Montgomery as well as The Defendant in Trial by Jury for the 2008-
2009 season.
On stage, Mr. Toral has appeared with the New York City Opera, Glimmerglass
Opera, Cincinnati Opera, New Orleans Opera, Opera Carolina, New Jersey
State Opera, Connecticut Grand Opera, Opera Tampa, Sarasota Opera and El
Paso Opera and has over 45 operatic roles to his credit, including the leading
roles of Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Fenton in Falstaff, Don Ottavio in Don
Giovanni, Roméo in Roméo et Juliette , Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia,
Alfredo in La Traviata, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Belmonte in Die
Entführung aus dem Serail and Ruggero in La Rondine.
Recently, the tenor made his European debut singing the leading tenor roles in
Rossini’s La Cambiale di Matrimonio and Il Signor Bruschino at the Teatro
Sociale in Brescia, Italy. He has shared the stage with many of today’s leading
operatic talents including performances of Othello as Roderigo opposite Carlo
Bergonzi, Tosca as Spoletta with Aprile Millo, Roderigo in Lucia di
Lamermoor starring Sumi Jo and Remendado in Carmen with Irina Mishura.
Other highlights include Falstaff under the baton of Seiji Ozawa - heard on
NPR's World of Opera and an auspicious debut at the Ravinia Music Festival
singing the title role in de Falla’s El Retablo de Maese Pedro.
A frequent collaborator with today's contemporary composers he has premiered
a number of operas including the Emmy nominated triptych opera Central
Park, creating the roles of Roy, the Man with Sun Reflectors opposite Lauren
Flanigan in Beaser’s The Food of Love and The Boy in Torke’s Strawberry
Fields - seen nationally on PBS' Great Performances. He also created the role of
Jacques Dupin in the world premiere of Thea Musgrave's opera Pontalba at
New Orleans Opera, commissioned to mark the 200th anniversary of the
Louisiana Purchase. For a number of seasons he has been involved with
American Opera Projects in their series "Composers and the Voice" as well as in
readings of Paula Kimper's The Bridge of San Luis Rey. He has also
appeared with the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music performing
works by Gunther Schuller.
His musical theater performances are highlighted by his Broadway debut in Baz
Luhrmann’s La Bohéme on Broadway (original cast recording) and appearing in
the 57th Annual Tony Awards from Radio City Music Hall, broadcast on CBS.
Other musical theater roles include the title role in Candide, Henrik in A Little
Night Music, Tony in West Side Story and Teen Angel in Grease.
Concert engagements for Enrique Toral are highlighted by performances for
New York City Opera's VOX: Showcasing American Composers and with
such groups as the Orchestra Gianandrea Gavazzeni (Italy), members of the
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Northern Kentucky Symphony, Fresno
Philharmonic Orchestra, New York Repertory Orchestra and the Napa Valley
Symphony & Chorale. His repertoire includes Messiah, Carmina Burana,
Bach’s Magnificat, Michael Haydn’s Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater as well
as Handel's Dixit Dominus. An avid recitalist, Mr. Toral has presented recitals
with the Glimmerglass Opera, Tanglewood Music Festival, Great Hall at Cooper
Union and the San Francisco Art Song Festival - honoring guest Ned Rorem and
his works.
A winner at numerous competitions, Mr. Toral was a District and Regional
Winner in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Regional Winner
in the MacAllister Awards for Opera Singers, a recipient of a Gerda Lissner
Foundation Award, the Athena and James Garivaltis Fellowship Award and a
Fellowship Grant Recipient in the Heinz Rehfuss Singing Actor Awards.
Mr. Toral is a proud member of National Association of Teachers of Singing,
American Guild of Musical Artists, Actors Equity Association and American
Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
