Biography
Hailed as “an excellent tenor” by The Boston Globe, ENRIQUE TORAL is an artist who has won acclaim across North America and Europe for the beauty and incisiveness of his singing and for his dynamic stage portrayals. Enrique has appeared with the New York City Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Cincinnati Opera, San Diego Opera, New Orleans Opera, Opera Carolina, New Jersey State Opera, Connecticut Grand Opera, Opera Tampa, Sarasota Opera and El Paso Opera and has over 45 operatic roles to his credit.
The tenor made his European debut singing the leading tenor roles in a Rossini double bill as Edoardo Millfort in La Cambiale di Matrimonio and Florville in Il Signor Bruschino at the Teatro Sociale in Brescia, Italy. He has shared the stage with many leading operatic talents including performances of Otello as Roderigo opposite Carlo Bergonzi, Tosca as Spoletta with Aprile Millo and Normanno in Lucia di Lamermoor starring Sumi Jo. He made his Broadway principal debut as Parpignol in Baz Luhrmann’s Tony nominated La Bohéme, a role he reprised with the San Diego Opera, and appeared in the 57th Annual Tony Awards from Radio City Music Hall, broadcast on CBS.
Other highlights include Bardolfo in Falstaff under the baton of Seiji Ozawa – heard on NPR's World of Opera and an auspicious debut at the Ravinia Music Festival singing the title role in Manuel de Falla’s El Retablo de Maese Pedro and the world premiere of John Bowle’s Lorca Songs. A frequent collaborator with today's contemporary composers he has premiered a number of operas including the Emmy nominated triptych opera Central Park, creating the roles of Roy, opposite Lauren Flanigan in Beaser’s The Food of Love and The Boy in Torke’s Strawberry Fields – seen nationally on PBS' Great Performances. He also created the role of Jacques Dupin in the world premiere of Thea Musgrave's opera Pontalba at New Orleans Opera, commissioned to mark the 200th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase. The tenor has also appeared with the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music, performing works by Gunther Schuller.
In addition to appearing with San Diego Opera in featured roles in La Fille du Regiment and La Bohéme, his other notable appearances in San Diego include performances with what became his home company, the Lyric Opera of San Diego. There, he was seen as The Defendant in Trial by Jury, a role he reprised for Bodhi Tree Concerts, Prunier in La Rondine and most notably in the title role in the world premiere of Rumpelstiltskin by Nicolas Reveles. Of his performances San Diego Theater Scene stated: “The very best thing about the production was the central performance. The magnificent tenor Enrique Toral was simply splendid as the nasty, conniving, greedy, hunched-over Rumpelstiltskin.” He was also seen in the world premiere of Sextet by Reveles with Diversionary Theater. He made his Copley Symphony Hall debut head-lining with the Romero Guitar Duo as a guest artist with the San Diego Master Chorale, performing selections from the zarzuela Luisa Fernanda.
